Life in Hamamatsu City,
Shizuoka:
Maruhon is located in one of the nicest areas of Japan, Hamamatsu City of Shizuoka prefecture.
Shizuoka is both the name of the prefecture and the name of the capital city. In a recent survey, Shizuoka
prefecture was ranked as the most popular place to live in Japan. We are within a two hour train ride of either Tokyo, Kyoto, or Osaka, and 45 minutes from downtown Nagoya. The office is about 10 minutes from the mountains, and 30-40 minutes from the seashore.
We used to be in "Hamakita City," outside of Hamamatsu, but in the summer of 2005, Hamamatsu swallowed 11 of its surrounding towns including Hamakita and Tenryu. Hamamatsu is now the 2nd largest city in Japan in term of square area, although only 15th in poplulation with about 800,000 people. From north to south, Hamamatsu stretches from the Pacific Ocean to Nagano prefecture.
Like much of Japan, the weather is hot and humid in the summer, cold and windy in the winter. Fall and spring are
particularly beautiful. There is little snow in our immediate area, but ski resorts are just a few hours up into the mountains.
Hamamatsu, "Pine Tree Beach," is famous for its summer kite festival, BBQ eel, green tea and oranges. There are all the benefits of a large city, but very few of the hassles. Traffic is minimal, except on the occasional Sunday afternoon. Public transportation around the city or out of the city is good. English books and videos and foreign food can be found to satisfy most homesick cravings. There are museums for the weekend afternoons and discos and pubs for evenings. The Tenryu river is a five minute walk up the street, and a forest park with a good exercise trail and many picnic areas is a few minutes drive away. Several beautiful temples and shrines are nearby, as well as a small pottery village. There are several good onsen areas within an hour's drive.
Lake Hamana and the seashore nearby beaches offer opportunities to enjoy a variety of water sports. Lake Hamana is also famous for its eel and oysters.
The Hamamatsu Kite festival is held every year in May. Neighborhoods work all year preparing kites and then hold "battles" over the dunes, trying to knock other neighborhood kites out of the air. A large parade is held through downtown Hamamatsu, and each neighborhood holds a special parade as dancers go around to houses where boys have been born in the past year.
Please note that we do not offer internships for any positions/nationalities at this time.
